To say that the original early-'80s incarnation of the Wild Swans had a reputation outsized by its formal releases puts it mildly - only one single was ever released, but such was both the impact of the band on its times and the long shadow it cast that the release of Incandescent seems like a logical conclusion more than a case of overkill. It is, certainly, as exhaustive as one could want.

The wild swans band

Due to time constraints and health (I want to get out there and walk to get my weight down, rather than sitting on this fecking laptop every night), I'm going to try and wean myself off wearejames for a while. In the meantime, one final rant (deep breath): 'Lost Innocence' (groans and sighs from everyone else).I make no apologies for being obsessed by this album-that-never-was, or by the fact that early James, their b-sides, their radio sessions, even their very existence, is so badly served by any readily available CD. I was bitterly dissappointed that 'Lost Innocence' never came out - at least, the 'Lost Innocence' I imagined in my mind's ear: a collection of b-sides, single versions and radio sessions from 1983-1989, aping similar compilation discs like 'Longshot For Your Love' by the Pale Fountains or 'Incandescent' by the Wild Swans. So, on my blog, I've made one up. Culled from various bootlegs (of hugely varying sound quality, volume and bitrate) it contains nothing previously available on CD (apart from 1987 Sire promo version of 'Ya Ho'), so the Rough Trade-era tracks are missing (I'd hope they would have another compilation devoted to them!) But every other non-FAAD early b-side, most (but not all the) radio sessions from the early days, and an audio recording of James' first TV appearance are all present and correct. Some radio sessions have not been included for reasons of space - basically, I've tried to include all the important ones (the first 'Sit Down', otherwise unreleased songs, etc) but left out some others (either because, like GLR's 1989 'Promised Land', they're not that different to the studio version, or simply because I don't have them or like them). So here's the link to 79 minutes of mp3s in a rar file: The admin here can take it down if they want. But instead, can they MAKE SURE THAT THIS, OR SOMETHING LIKE IT, IS EVENTUALLY RELEASED IN PRISTINE QUALITY FOR FANS TO ACTUALLY BUY.!

(cough)Here's the tracklisting. Enjoy:01 Vulture (Peel Session 83)02 Discipline (Peel Session 83)03 Chicken Wire (If Things Were Perfect) (Peel Session 83)04 Hymn From a Village (Peel Session 83)05 If Things Were Perfect (at the ICA for the 'Old Grey Whistle Test', 1985)06 Hup-Springs (Sandman)07 Uprising08 Just Hipper09 Stowaway (1987 Peel Session)10 What For? (1987 Peel Session)11 Island Swing12 Ya Ho (Single Edit)13 Mosquito14 Left Out Of Her Will15 New Nature16 Sit Down (1988 Andy Kershaw Session)17 Stripmining (1988 Andy Kershaw Session)18 Violent Rain (1990 Radio Europe Session)19 Sunday Morning (1990 Peel Session)20 How Was It For You (1990 Peel Session)21 Come Home (1990 Peel Session)22 Weather Change (1990 Flexi)23 Stutter (Previously unreleased, as they say)I think it works well as an album, and balances enough well-known songs with hen's teeth rarities that it could sell quite well. Probably not top 10 material, but it certainly wouldn't detract from James' current work if it were to see the official light of day (all remastered, of course!)Top. I've downloaded it but can't open it.

Paranormalhandy,I think this is probably the best use of the words 'we're gonna miss you when your gone'.A huge pat on the back and firm handshake to (for me) probably one of the most knowledgeable music info people on this forum.I t has been good conversing with you - i know its not goodbye but i will miss the strange comfort of the early morning posts and witicisms. Will probably keep in touch at the other place and thanks for the link above - not listened yet, but the list is for me pretty definitive to the best of James - your listing is impeccable.Respectfully yoursZipTop.
