I was just scrolling through the store when i saw Torchlight 2. It looked really fun so i researched it and found out that some of the people who made this made Fate. As a kid I loved Fate and ive enjoyed playing dungeon crawlers before. So now im considering buying one of these (or both since with the sale it would only cost around 10 bucks) but i dont know if that would be smart. Since i have the option, should i buy both and play them or just go straight to Torchlight 2, which would save me some money. Basically should i buy both or just TL2 because its an imporved version of TL1? Torchlight 1 is a but rough, but there are mods over at that when you use them fill in all the rough areas nicely, Do a little reading and you will find mods that fix and enhance the defualt gameplay without making what you find and your character OP.
TL1 plays more old school where you go into a cave network that goes so far down that there are sub terrarian biomes. It has more grit and grim then TL2.Torchlight 2 is more polished, has an overworld, dungeons, and more natural flow as you venture along. It has co-op where Torchlight 1 was only solo. To be honest both games are worth owning, but if you want to play with friends, enjoy an overworld + dungeons, have easy to access steamworkshop mods, then go for that instead. I own both of the games and love them for different reasons.
Even after beating Torchlight 2 and making it all the way to NG I still like it and still want to play Torchlight 1. I think that the Second one is more cohesive, as I think that Torchlight 1 was kinda testing the waters for Diablo 3 (forgive me if I am mistaken, but I thought Blizzard was in on the first). With that being said, the first one was a great game, but the overworld element of the second just brings the first to its knees, begging for mercy from it's epic hammer of overworld-ed-ness.Also, Steam Workshop makes mods more available, and I think that it makes this game more mod-friendly, propably producing more mods to play with.EDIT: Also, multiplayer.
I personally prefer TL1 because of the endless enchanting(and chance to see how a weapon with 150+ enchants fails at next enchant and you lose it). As far as I read TL1 got a MP mod for steam version. On the other hand TL2 got a decent modding community and working MP and it feels more like Diablo 2 where you explore different zones while in TL1 you just go deeper and deeper in the dungeon. Both got the random dungeon maps though.Anyway you may just pick both, play them through once(cant tell how much time it will take but TL1 got 50 floors and for TL2 I think i needed like 12-13hours to finish it). I only finished TL1 but kind of struggling with TL2 the enviroments feel larger and less interesting than TL1 imo.
Their both great but the beauty of estherian ruins map in tl1 really blew me away. TL2.the closest thing that came to it was the icy snow map but.it's still kind of lacking.
Be wary of any future titles from Runic Games though. The founders of Runic and who conceived both Torchlights left the studio after PWE issues. Turned in late google classroom hack.
PWE is known for their stream of p2w free to play rpg's and now that they hold the majority stake in runic anything dished out by them will be fueled with profit first game second.
